Wild hares from Hungary

Every year, from November to March, GIBIS organises capture campaigns for brown hares (Lepus europaeus) on the great plains of Hungary. These hares come from healthy wild populations and are caught in areas of high density, which keeps the impact on local populations to a minimum. Each campaign is run in close cooperation with Hungarian hunting federations and under the supervision of the veterinary authorities. Capture season

From November to March, a winter capture period ahead of the main leveret season, to minimise the impact on populations.

Capture methods

The hares are caught exclusively with nets, using a proven traditional Hungarian method. Beaters on foot gradually drive the hares towards stretched nets, without any chemicals, anaesthetics or motorised equipment. This animal-friendly method keeps stress to a minimum and preserves the physical integrity of every hare caught.

Traditional method: beaters on foot drive the hares into fixed nets, with no vehicles and no chemicals.

Zero chemicals

No anaesthetic, tranquilliser or chemical substance is used during capture.

Physical integrity

Each hare is inspected immediately after capture. Only animals in perfect condition are kept.

Quarantine and health monitoring

After capture, the hares are placed in quarantine in dedicated facilities in Hungary, under the supervision of an approved veterinarian. During this period, serological and parasitological tests are carried out. Only animals with a clean bill of health are authorised for export. A European health certificate accompanies each batch on delivery.

Mandatory quarantine

Laboratory tests

Systematic serological (brucellosis, tularaemia) and parasitological tests on every batch.

European health certificate

TRACES certificate issued by the Hungarian veterinary authorities, in line with EU regulations.

What does a live hare cost?

At the prices listed for the 2026-2027 season, wild-caught hares are sold as a pair for €410.00 (1 buck + 1 doe), as a trio for €650.00 (1 buck + 2 does) or as a single buck for €180.00; the lot of 10 hares (6 bucks + 2 pairs) works out at €180.00 each. RHD vaccination and rehydration serum are optional extras at +€5.00 per hare. The French leveret, 3 to 4 months old and raised in our paddocks at Chatte, sells for €95.00 each. Transport is quoted according to the destination: quote on +33 4 76 38 31 01.

Where do GIBIS import hares come from?

Our import hares are caught wild in Hungary and Romania, in areas of very high density. Each animal has a numbered ring for traceability. Capture operations are conducted by net, with no chemicals, in collaboration with local hunting federations.

Are the females pregnant?

Females delivered by GIBIS are deemed pregnant, as they come from wild populations in full breeding activity. This characteristic maximises the success of your restocking operations.

When should I reserve my import hares?

Orders are confirmed with a deposit paid before 20 December. Deliveries take place from January to March. We recommend reserving as early as possible as quantities are limited by capture quotas.

What health checks are carried out?

Each hare undergoes a complete health check: blood test, EEC certification, quarantine under veterinary supervision. A European health certificate accompanies every batch. VHD vaccination and rehydrating serum injection are available as options.
